The Rock and the Keys
Matthew 16:18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (NKJV)
In Matthew 16 when Jesus asked His disciples who men said He was, they mentioned Elijah and other prophets. Then Jesus point blank asked Peter, “Who do YOU say that I am?”
Peter answered in verse 16, “You are the Christ. The Son of the living God.” Jesus knew nobody told Peter this but God. It was obvious the Holy Spirit was already working through Peter.
Jesus continues to tell Peter, “I will give unto you the keys to the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven whatsoever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19, NKJV).
Jesus uses rocks and keys as metaphors. Metaphors are often used by Jesus. The keys Jesus mentions are Peter preaching first to the Gentiles at the house of Cornelius in Acts 10. Peter was the first to preach to the Jews at Pentecost. Peter preached Jesus as the key for the Kingdom of heaven to both Jews and Gentiles.
Then the rock. I have never studied the Greek language but my pastor has and many of my friends have. They tell me the word rock is a small stone. Jesus was the cornerstone upon which He would build His church. Jesus was telling Peter he was a small rock but upon the rock (Jesus himself) the church would be built.
Lord, may Heaven be opened to the students at Juanita School for Girls in Kenya. May they stand firmly on the Rock of Salvation and enjoy spiritually steadfast lives. May they receive the education they need to provide a living for themselves and their families, and maintain a steadfast course of standing on Jesus as the rock of their character.
