Morning Meditation – Spiritual Worship
Morning Meditation with George Hutchings
Spiritual Worship
Ephesians 5:19-20 “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (NKJV)
In February 1970, I became a man of faith and it changed everything for me. In church we sang the beautiful hymns of the faith. On the way home those same hymns sprang up within us and we continued to sing. We landed our car in another worshiper’s driveway and proceeded to the door where we heard the same singing.
Conversation around the dining room table included what we had heard from the preacher that morning. The late Rev. Robert S. Whitehead knew the scriptures and how to teach them. In spontaneous fashion we spoke to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts. The Lord was being worshiped in a spiritual and spontaneous fashion.
That was quite different from my worship before becoming a man of faith. Church was boring. The songs—I never heard of them. And the sermon was as dried up like dead men’s bones. Church was a place where I put in my time and pretended to be righteous. What a difference there is for me before and after coming to faith.
Jesus taught us in John 4:24 that those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Spirit is life and true worshippers worship in the spirit of life and then in truth. You can’t worship in false doctrine or with lies and deception. The true worshipper knows how to “rightly divide the word of truth.” The true worshipper worships in the spirit and in truth.
And the worshipper must give thanks. Jesus told the parable of healing 10 lepers, but only one came back to give thanks.
May our students at Juanita School for Girls follow Christ and experience the joy of true worship. May they go home singing hymns of the faith all week long. May they also learn to rightly divide the word of truth. May they never “just put their time in,” but enjoy the fruits of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, meekness, faith, longsuffering, self-control. May these be the hallmarks of their lives.
