Morning Meditation – A Cause of Depression

A Cause of Depression
Psalm 25:7 “Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. According to Your mercy remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O Lord. (NKJV)
In 1967, I served my country in Vietnam and did horrible things there. Those things brought me under conviction of sin and led me to become a man of faith. However, the memory of the past haunted me and, like Adam, I ran from the Lord. But the burden of the past became too heavy to carry. I had a nervous breakdown. I went through 30-plus electric shock treatments. Finally, the treatments erased my memory and I no longer remembered the hateful past.
Slowly, my memory returned and I was restored without the memory of war haunting me. I had been like King David, “Do not remember the sins of my youth nor my transgressions.” My youthful sins had caused me to carry a hateful depression. And in addition to that I had transgressions. Some sins are just human fallible imperfections, but a transgression is a sin that is plotted and planned and goes directly against the Lord. I was guilty of transgressions. The past guilt and the present transgressions caused a huge cloud to cover me called, depression.
David’s prayer is the sound of deep depression. “Do not remember the sins of my youth nor my transgressions.” David’s appeals to the loving and merciful nature of God. “According to your mercy, remember me for your goodness’s sake, O Lord.”
There are different kinds of depression. The first is the depression of the situation. When the situation passes the depression lifts. It is part of life.
The second type of depression is deeper. It’s called bi-polar disorder and is a chemical imbalance. I suffer from this type of depression. Everything may be going perfect but a black cloud hangs overhead causing a melancholy disposition. This type of depression needs medication. It sometimes takes doctors years to find the right combination of medicine to relieve the sadness. In addition, a bi-polar disorder person must learn coping habits to fight off the ugly cloud.
And the third type of depression is the conviction of sin. When a person sins, they make a bad action and the feeling follows the action. When you do something good, a good feeling follows the action. The feeling follows the action. When David repented, the refreshing goodness of God followed and he was freed of the depression. He was cleansed.
Situational depression lifts with the turning of events. Bi-polar disorder is managed with medication and learned coping mechanisms. But, the third type of depression is never mentioned by a psychologist. Doctors only know medicine and try to cover the symptoms of sin with medicine or talk-therapy. The sinner needs a savior and the refreshing forgiveness that only comes from above.
May our students at Juanita School for Girls not only learn their academics and how to make a living, but also learn the refreshing power of confession of sin and the merciful goodness of God. Then, they can enjoy a life lived in obedience to the Master.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
