That You May Know You Have Eternal Live

1 John 5:13 “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”

Before becoming a man of faith I would occasionally hear the word “saved.”  I thought it meant being saved from falling overboard on a boat. Or ,the police saved me from harm. It had no spiritual meaning to me. Then one day, I heard someone using the word in a spiritual sense and I thought they were arrogant and bragging that they knew they were going to heaven. I did not believe anyone could have that knowledge ahead of time.

I thought going to heaven was like throwing dice. I roll my life and hope it comes up at seven or eleven. Then, I sinned against a holy God and knew I wasn’t going to heaven, but what to do about it—I didn’t know. However, I still I believed no one could know they were going to heaven  When I met Johnny Greenwood in Nashville, he asked me out straight, “Have you been saved?”

I didn’t know what to say. I told him I went to church.

He received me as a friend and I made him a friend. But, I didn’t understand his spiritual language.

After several divine appointments and a trip to a Baptist church a preacher asked if I knew I had eternal life. I answered in the negative. He asked if I would like to know and be assured of eternal life and I replied, “of course.” Then I said I didn’t think anyone could know that before death.

Rev. Robert S. Whitehead turned in my Bible to 1 John 5:13 and showed me the scripture. He said the scripture says we may know. The book or 1 John—and the Bible in its entirety—was written so “we may know that we have eternal life….”

He took me to the book of Romans and led me through a few scriptures. There was that word again: “saved.”

“For whosoever would call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” That night I turned my coffee table into an altar and inserted my name where it said, “whosoever” and in faith I called upon the name of the Lord. And, I was saved! I knew I was saved from the hell I was headed toward.

I came up off my knees saying, “God has called me to be a preacher.” Pastor Whitehead said, “but you have not joined the church or been baptized.”

I told him not to worry. “I know God has called me to preach.” That was 50 years ago and I am still preaching “the just shall live by faith….and those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Where I once doubted the term saved, I now shout it from the mountaintops, “You shall be saved.”
